Dubbed fashion’s enfant terrible, Jean Paul Gaultier launched his first prêt-à-porter collection in 1976 and founded his own couture house in 1997. Emerging as a designer in the 1970s, he developed his own dress codes that reflected the changing world around him. The openly gay Gaultier uses his designs to tackle gender and transgender issues through androgynous, gender-bending styles, meanwhile delving even further into some of the darker areas of the sexual revolution. Always provocative, he addresses issues of multiculturalism by bringing ethnic diversity to the Paris runway. Despite the gritty and sometimes controversial context of his collections, the clothes remain beautiful, superbly crafted with the finest dressmaking and detailing skills.

This dynamic, multimedia exhibition will include 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs created between the mid-1970s and 2010, along with numerous sketches, archival documents, fashion photographs, and video clips that spotlight Gaultier’s collaborations with filmmakers, choreographers, and musicians, most notably Madonna. For this presentation, Gaultier partnered with the Montreal-based theater company Ubu Compagnie de Création in the design of 30 animated mannequins who talk and sing in playful and poetic vignettes.

This exhibit is absolutely amazing! Jean Paul Gaultier’s beautiful designs on display, nearly touchable, it’s like a dream. When you first enter, there are these mannequins wearing the desgins, with faces projected onto them. it’s a bit spooky, but very cool! There was one of Gaultier himself! They were talking and singing… and wearing designs of pure genius.

There were so many things to see – from the exquisitely detailed clothes on mannequins, photos of celebrities wearing Gaultier creations, sketches, videos, to the mannequin fashion show (which played Amy Winehouse songs as the mannequins paraded their fashions past us via conveyor belt.) I learned one fact i didn’t know – that even Kurt Cobain wore a Gaultier creation! If that’s not heaven for me, I don’t know what is.

As you can see, I had a spectacular time taking pictures with my phone. (no flash photography, please!) I didn’t expect to be abe to take pictures at all, so that was exciting to me. You can even submit your photos to the DeYoung!

Oh, and some people (students, maybe?) came up to me and took my picture of my lip piercings for a scavenger hunt they were participating in. It was fun, and amusing.

There was just so much to see, I wish I could go back! I certainly didn’t get to fully absorb everything as much as I would have liked!
